The original performance was with the Milwaukee Ballet at the Pabst Theatre, Milwaukee, U.S.A. in February 2005. It's been used in many other places, I won't list them all, a play in Philadelphia, an advert for Panasonic... blah. It's expanded over the years to what you can hear now. Here's the back story. John Utans had intended to use a piece by John Adams. He was unable to get permission to use it in the U.S. So Friday he called me with a brief to do something vaguely John Adams-like that could be ready by Tuesday when he was flying to Milwaukee. So I made (the first parts of) this, American orchestral minimalism 101. No rough edges, nothing too challenging. I ended up being very invested in this and it became mine rather than something I'd been briefed to do.
